Blandford Forum, Market Area Enhancement

Decision

That a grant of £70,000 is made to Blandford Forum Town Council towards the enhancement of the market area.

Reason for Decision

Blandford Forum Town Council is developing the weekly markets, to bring more people into the town centre. The area used by the market is a key part of the town centre,  providing a space for the twice weekly markets. It is also an important venue for open air events, and provides a valuable frontspace to the very special ensemble of the Corn Exchange and adjoining Georgian facades.  This project would improve this area, including some pedestrianisation of the market area as well.

The total cost of the project is anticipated as between £220,000 & £340,000 (depending on the decision on materials to be used), and a grant of £70,000 from the District Council would be a significant contribution, and also act as match funding for other grants.

The Council intends, therefore, to award a grant of £70,000 to Blandford Forum Town Council , for the purposes as set out above.

Alternative options considered and rejected

Not to support this project. It is considered important to support Blandford Forum Town Council in its work developing the market, and this funding would provide a significant contribution, and also act as match funding for other funds.
