That a grant of £70,000 is made to Gillingham Town Council towards the Town Gateway Project.
Reason for Decision
Gillingham is the largest town in North Dorset and growing significantly. It is home to many businesses and has a vibrant community. However, it has a poor external image. This project, developed by the Town Council with some
community input, will enhance Gillingham’s jaded principle gateways into the town, to improve the image of Gillingham, help attract future investment, and improve civic pride. This project comprises improvements to a total of 7 locations (including one project at the Station which is also an important Gateway).
The total project costs are estimated at £97,000, and other grants for this work will be difficult to secure, except towards improvements at one location where initial funding could secure match funding. So a grant of £70,000 from the District Council will be a significant contribution to the project, could be used as match funding for one location, and the project as a whole can be scaled if need be.
The Council intends, therefore, to award a grant of £70,000 for the Gillingham Town Gateway project, for the purposes as set out above.
Alternative options considered and rejected
Not to support the project. It is considered important to support Gillingham Town Council in its Town Gateway project, which would not progress without this funding, and this funding will also act as match funding for one element of the project.
